Two people have died due to a helicopter crash which took place in the East River of New York City on Sunday.

At a press conference, New York Fire Commission Daniel Nigro called this incident “a great tragedy”. He said: “It took a while for divers to get the people out. They worked very quickly, as fast as they could. That’s 50ft [15m] of water there.’’

He also added that the divers had to work under different water currents as well as temperatures of below 4C.

Authorities have confirmed that the helicopter was carrying six passengers who were involved in a photo shoot and three out of the six passengers are in a critical condition in hospital. However, the New York City fire department told the media that the pilot managed to free himself.

Meanwhile the Federal Aviation said it was investigating the incident while the National Transportation Safety Board would determine the cause of it.
