The Hope of Hopeless, a community-driven non-profit organization, is preparing for a powerful awareness campaign titled “Long Walk to a Drug-Free Society and Ending Gender-Based Violence Against the Boy Child.”

The initiative aims to shine a light on two critical challenges affecting communities across South Africa — drug abuse and gender-based violence (GBV), particularly the often-overlooked impact on boys.

The campaign will take the form of a long-distance awareness walk from Polokwane to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, from the 23rd to 30th of July 2026.

Organized by Hope of Hopelessb (NPO), the walk seeks to mobilize communities, raise awareness, and encourage meaningful dialogue about the social issues affecting families and young people across the country.

Drug abuse has become one of the most pressing problems in many communities, especially among young people. The easy availability of substances and the lack of support systems have contributed to increasing addiction, crime, and the breakdown of families.

Through this walk, organizers hope to promote a strong message that communities must unite to protect young people and build a drug-free society.

At the same time, the campaign highlights the issue of gender-based violence against the boy child, a topic that often receives little attention.

Many boys experience abuse, neglect, bullying, and emotional trauma but struggle to speak out due to social stigma such as “Monna ke Nku ollela teng” (‘Man dont cry’-English translation), and expectations around masculinity.

Hope of Hopeless believes that every child — regardless of gender — deserves protection, dignity, and a safe environment to grow and thrive.

The long walk will travel from town to town, encouraging residents to participate, join discussions, and stand together against drug abuse and violence.

Community members, youth groups, schools, faith-based organizations, and local leaders are expected to take part along the route, turning the journey into a moving platform for education, advocacy, and unity.

According to the organizers, the purpose of the campaign is not only to raise awareness but also to create lasting conversations about prevention, support, and community responsibility. By walking together, participants symbolically demonstrate that society must take collective action to address these issues.

Hope of Hopeless emphasizes that the movement is about hope, healing, and building a better future. The organization believes that through awareness, education, and community involvement, it is possible to reduce drug abuse, protect vulnerable children, and promote a culture of respect and equality.

The Long Walk to a Drug-Free Society and Ending GBV Against the Boy Child stands as a call for communities to come together, support one another, and work toward a safer and healthier future for the next generation.
